Our Activities, Your Support

In 2021, over 600 people signed the Friends of the Gulf Islands' petition to the Islands Trust. Council has not responded.

It has been 2 years since you and over 600 others signed the Friends of the Gulf Islands’ petition to the Islands Trust. That petition asked Trust Council to make protecting the environment of the Trust Islands their first priority in all decisions as required by the Object of the Trust Act: “to preserve and protect the environment and unique amenities of the Trust Area.”

Unfortunately, Council has NOT RESPONDED.

Therefore, we have been considering legal action, but even investigating this is expensive. To strengthen our position and raise funds, we are excited to announce that we have merged with the Pender Islands Trust Protection Society to become Friends of the Gulf Islands Society.

Now, we need YOUR support by joining the Society. A large membership is critical to strengthening our position. We will also gratefully accept donations beyond the membership fee of $15. Members will receive occasional newsletters, notices about educational webinars, and will be invited to attend our monthly Zoom Board meetings.

Below is a summary of our past and planned activities. We:

  • have monitored meetings and made numerous presentations to Council;
  • have advocated for scientific studies to establish the carrying capacity of each island and that these studies be used to determine the type and location of development that is low density and rural in nature;
  • have also advocated for forestry practices that protect natural ecosystems and residential water supplies; and
  • plan to support these requests with educational activities in the coming year.

The environment has no voice if we don’t speak up. Please support our efforts by becoming a member and/or donating. Thank you!

We are also supporting other like-minded Trust Islands’ groups. If your group wants to be included, please email us.
