Friends of the Gulf Islands Society is a collaboration of islanders focussed on the islands under the jurisdiction of the Islands Trust, a unique “public trust” created by the British Columbia legislature in 1974 to stop unrestrained development and preserve the natural environment and rural character of the islands for all British Columbians. We advocate for our elected trustees and the Province of BC to fulfill their obligation under the Trust Act “to preserve and protect” the Trust islands during these times of increasing development pressures and the climate crisis.
New trustees will be elected to run the Islands Trust this October 17th. The pre-election period starts July 20. Residents and most owners of vacation properties on the islands can vote in this election.
