What does the Island Trust and its trustees do anyway?
The Islands Trust – At a Crossroads
WELCOME To
Friends of the Gulf Islands Society is a collaboration of islanders focussed on the islands under the jurisdiction of the Islands Trust, a unique “public trust” created by the British Columbia legislature in 1974 to stop unrestrained development and preserve the natural environment and rural character of the islands for all British Columbians. We advocate for our elected trustees and the Province of BC to fulfill their obligation under the Trust Act “to preserve and protect” the Trust islands during these times of increasing development pressures and the climate crisis.

The Islands Trust – At a Crossroads

Environmentally Conscious Candidates for Islands Trust Needed!!!

Local trustees must develop a build-out report to determine what further development can be accommodated on each island.
The election for Islands Trust trustees is on October 17, 2026.
Help preserve and protect the unique amenities and environment of the islands in the Trust area by signing our new petition. Your voice matters!
Friends of the Gulf Islands acknowledges that the lands and waters that encompass the Islands Trust Area have been home to Indigenous peoples since time immemorial and honours the rich history, stewardship, and culture that embody this place we all call home.
